Caitlin Clark may have experienced an uneven start to the 2026 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup, but one thing has been remarkably consistent - her passing. Through three group-stage matches, the guard is averaging 6.3 assists per game, placing her third among all players in the tournament behind Turkey's Sevgi Uzun and Belgium's Julie Allemand.
That makes Clark the sole American in the top five of any major statistical category - a striking distinction given the depth of talent on Coach Kara Lawson's roster.
Clark's tournament opener against China was electric: 14 points and 11 assists. Against Italy, however, she was virtually invisible, contributing just one point and a single assist. She bounced back emphatically versus Czechia, posting nine points and seven assists as Team USA cruised to a 105-64 win.
Across those three outings, Clark averaged eight points, 2.7 rebounds, and led the squad with a plus-minus of plus-19.3 - the best mark on the team.
Perhaps the most notable aspect of Clark's World Cup so far is her willingness to come off the bench. It's a significant departure from her role as Indiana's primary offensive engine during the WNBA season, where she commands heavy minutes and shot volume. Yet even with reduced playing time and fewer attempts, her influence on proceedings has been unmistakable.
Team USA head into Wednesday's quarterfinal against Hungary with a perfect group-stage record and strong favouritism to claim a fifth consecutive gold medal. Lawson has stressed the need for greater consistency as the stakes rise, and Clark's ability to orchestrate the offence could prove decisive in the knockout rounds.
