Twelve months ago, Caitlin Clark's future looked uncertain. An injury-plagued campaign with the Indiana Fever had cast serious doubt over her trajectory. Fast forward to September 2026, and the guard finds herself at the heart of Team USA's quest for a record-extending 12th FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup title in Berlin.
The American roster is notably youthful. Half the 12-player group - including Clark, Angel Reese, and Paige Bueckers - are World Cup debutants. The squad has only had a handful of training sessions together since landing in the German capital, but veteran Chelsea Gray insists the transition should be smooth. Years of competing alongside and against one another in the WNBA means these players already understand each other's strengths.
This year's tournament features 16 teams and a slimmed-down preliminary round of just three group games, down from the usual five. Head coach Kara Lawson has stressed the importance of maximising every minute on the practice court to install tactical systems quickly. A group-stage win would reward the Americans with two rest days before the quarter-finals - a valuable buffer given the compressed schedule.
Unlike previous editions held after the WNBA season concluded, this World Cup falls during a mid-season pause. Gray suggested fewer games could actually benefit the players physically, offering some relief amid a gruelling domestic campaign.
The United States open their group stage against China, and they are heavy favourites to lift the trophy for a fifth consecutive time. Clark has spoken of her excitement at representing her country, and the entire squad appears laser-focused on maintaining USA Basketball's dominant legacy on the world stage.
