San Diego Wave host North Carolina Courage on Saturday in the NWSL Group Stage, and the form book makes for fascinating reading. Both sides share identical season records - 12 wins, 3 draws, 8 losses from 23 matches - but the Courage arrive riding an almighty wave of momentum that the hosts will struggle to ignore.
The Courage have won four of their last five, culminating in a jaw-dropping 6-0 demolition of Chicago Red Stars. That result was no fluke. North Carolina average 2.0 goals per match this season with 46 scored in 23 outings - comfortably the sharper attacking unit. Their away record reads six wins from eleven - a strong platform for a trip to San Diego.
The Wave's home form is a genuine concern. Five losses and five blank scoresheets in twelve home matches tell a story of inconsistency. A 1-0 defeat at Seattle last time out halted a run of two consecutive wins, and San Diego's season average of 1.4 goals per game pales against their visitors' output.
History leans heavily towards North Carolina. The Courage won both meetings in 2024 - including a commanding 4-1 victory in San Diego. Last season's fixtures split: San Diego triumphed 5-2 at home before a goalless draw in North Carolina. The pendulum swings, but the Courage have the more dominant overall record at this venue.
North Carolina's defensive solidity - seven clean sheets compared to San Diego's five - gives them the edge at both ends. The Courage concede an average of 1.4 goals, yet their firepower can absorb that. San Diego must find a clinical edge they have often lacked at home to contain a side brimming with confidence.
