Paige Metayer was in the right place at the right time to hand Washington Spirit a 1-0 victory over Bay FC. Trinity Rodman rattled the crossbar deep into first-half stoppage time, and Metayer reacted quickest to hammer home the rebound before the keeper could recover.
Rodman was on the receiving end of a late challenge from Bay FC's Maddie Moreau, who picked up a yellow card. Metayer and teammate Gabrielle Carle were also booked. The sides matched each other with four shots on target apiece, though Bay FC held a narrow advantage in possession, as AP reports.
Seattle Reign grabbed all three points thanks to Maddie Dahlien's 52nd-minute strike in a 1-0 win over Houston Dash. Dahlien was a constant menace, firing five shots - four on target - with Maddie Mercado teeing her up for the decisive goal.
Houston goalkeeper Jane Campbell kept her side in the contest with four saves, including a vital denial of Dahlien in the 80th minute. Both clubs now face the prospect of losing key players to the United States Under-20 women's squad ahead of the U-20 Women's World Cup in Poland.
