Denmark's Melissa Mortensen survived a second-round knockdown to defeat Mayeli Flores Rosquero by split decision and claim the WBA Super Bantamweight World Championship in Temecula, California.

Melissa Mortensen is the new WBA Super Bantamweight World Champion after edging past Mexico's Mayeli Flores Rosquero in a gripping split decision at Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, California.
Two of the three judges scored the contest 95-94 in Mortensen's favour, while the third had it 95-94 for Flores - as tight a margin as it gets at world level.
Flores made a dramatic statement in the second round, flooring Mortensen with a sharp left hook. But the Danish fighter showed real composure, picking herself up and recalibrating her approach from the third round onwards.
Using her superior height and reach, Mortensen began dictating range and finding a rhythm that Flores struggled to break down.
Flores kept coming forward in the closing rounds, but Mortensen's slick footwork and well-timed counterpunching earned her the crucial points when it mattered most, as reported by The World Boxing Association.
The victory preserves Mortensen's unbeaten professional record and earns her the coveted WBA black-and-gold belt at 122 pounds.
