Mainz women fell 0-2 to double champions Bayern Munich but head coach Takashi Yamashita sees progress ahead of Saturday's home date with 1. FC Köln.

Mainz's women's side came home empty-handed after falling 0-2 to reigning double champions Bayern Munich, yet there was no shortage of optimism in the camp.
Head coach Takashi Yamashita pointed to clear defensive improvements since the earlier home fixture against Bremen, insisting his players matched Bayern's intensity for long stretches. The scoreline stung, but the performance offered genuine encouragement.
Yamashita was candid about the gaps that remain. Ball retention needs significant improvement, and the physical demands of the top flight are taking their toll - the squad currently sits below the league average for high-intensity running and sprints.
"We must stick to our plan," the coach stressed, signalling that patience and process will define Mainz's approach to life in the Google Pixel Frauen-Bundesliga.
Attention now shifts to Saturday's clash with 1. FC Köln, who sit seventh in the table. Kick-off at Bruchwegstadion is set for 14:00. Yamashita's side will recognise plenty in Köln's style - it closely mirrors the way Mainz themselves played last season, which could prove both an advantage and a trap.
