SC Freiburg welcome Mainz 05 to round four of the Frauen Bundesliga on Sunday, and the contrast between these two sides could hardly be starker. Freiburg sit on four points from three matches - a draw at Hamburger SV, a home win over Union Berlin, and a defeat away to Bayern Munich. Mainz, meanwhile, are rock bottom with three defeats from three, having conceded eight goals and scored just once.
The hosts boast a perfect home record so far - one game, one win, one clean sheet. That 1-0 victory over Union Berlin was grinding rather than glamorous, but it demonstrated defensive discipline. Away from home, Freiburg have shipped five goals in two matches, yet at their own ground they look a different proposition entirely.
It has been a brutal introduction for Mainz at this level. A 1-2 home loss to Werder Bremen was followed by a 0-2 defeat at Bayern Munich, before FC Koln hammered them 4-0 at home last weekend. They have failed to score in two of their three outings, averaging just 0.3 goals per match. Defensively, the numbers are alarming - 2.7 goals conceded per game tells its own story.
Freiburg should feel confident. Their home solidity contrasts sharply with Mainz's inability to keep clean sheets or threaten in attack. Expect the hosts to control proceedings, press for early goals, and look to extend their perfect home run. For Mainz, damage limitation may be the realistic objective - but without a significant improvement in both boxes, their winless start looks set to continue.
