Fifth seed Mirra Andreeva is into the US Open quarter-finals after overcoming Anastasia Potapova in a gruelling three-set contest marred by injury. The Russian teenager prevailed 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in a match lasting two hours and 27 minutes against the 24th seed.
What had been a fiercely competitive affair took a sombre turn in the decider when Potapova went down chasing an Andreeva forehand, damaging her left knee. In a moment of genuine sportsmanship, Andreeva rushed to her opponent's side, guiding her back to her chair and calling for ice.
Potapova bravely returned to court with her knee heavily strapped but could not win another point. The pair shared a long embrace at the net - a poignant end to a thrilling battle.
The result gives Andreeva a commanding 4-1 lead in her career meetings with Potapova and represents her second victory over her compatriot this year. She has now reached five Grand Slam quarter-finals across three of the four majors - a remarkable run of consistency at just her age.
Up next, Andreeva will face either fourth seed Coco Gauff or 14th seed Iva Jovic for a place in the semi-finals.
