Alex Eala's US Open campaign came to a halt on Sunday after a gruelling three-hour battle against Iva Jovic in the third round. Jovic edged the contest 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in front of a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd that largely rallied behind the Filipino star.
The atmosphere inside the iconic venue was electric, with supporters willing Eala on through every rally. Despite the vocal backing, Jovic held her nerve in the decisive moments, later acknowledging just how demanding the contest had been.
Jovic now progresses to the fourth round, where she will meet Coco Gauff, who advanced after defeating Cristina Bucsa. Gauff noted that she cannot fully comprehend the unique pressure Eala carries as the first Filipino player to reach such landmarks in the sport.
