Anna Nordqvist, one of Europe's finest golfers, has stunned the sport by announcing her immediate retirement after the FM Championship in Boston. The three-time major champion will now focus solely on captaining Team Europe at the Solheim Cup.

Anna Nordqvist has dropped a bombshell. The 39-year-old Swede - one of the most decorated European golfers of her generation - is walking away from professional golf.
Her final competitive appearance will come at the FM Championship in Boston. After that, the clubs go down for good.
Nordqvist revealed the decision on social media, expressing gratitude for a career that has spanned nearly two decades at the top of the women's game. She cited health concerns and a desire to prioritise family as the driving forces behind her exit.
The numbers speak for themselves. Nine LPGA Tour victories. Over $14 million in earnings. Three major titles - starting with the 2009 McDonald's LPGA Championship and ending with the 2021 AIG Women's British Open.
Her Solheim Cup record is equally formidable: 17 wins, 15 losses, and 3 ties across every edition of the competition since 2009. That kind of consistency is rare.
What makes Nordqvist's longevity even more remarkable is what she has endured off the course. The sudden death of her husband, Kevin McAlpine, and health issues requiring surgery have tested her in ways no scoreboard can reflect. Yet she was determined to leave the sport on her own terms - and that is exactly what she is doing.
Retirement from playing does not mean disappearing entirely. Nordqvist will now turn her full attention to captaining Team Europe at the upcoming Solheim Cup in The Netherlands. She has already made history as the first Solheim Cup captain to record a top-10 finish at a major during a Solheim Cup year.
Love her or not, Nordqvist's departure leaves a gaping hole in the women's game. Few have given more to European golf.
