Jessica Pegula refused to let a poor opening set derail her U.S. Open campaign, recovering from a set down to beat compatriot Emma Navarro 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 and book her spot in the last four.
It was a scrappy, intense affair - nine breaks of serve across 28 games, with numerous deuce battles punctuating a contest short on fluency but high on drama. Pegula squandered her first match point before sealing the deal with a clean winner.
The reward? Another date with Aryna Sabalenka - the defending champion and a player who has become Pegula's recurring nightmare at Flushing Meadows. The third seed will face Sabalenka in the U.S. Open semi-finals for the third consecutive year.
The pattern has been cruel. Pegula lost the 2024 final to Sabalenka, then fell to her again at the semi-final stage last year. Whether she can finally flip the script remains the compelling question.
There is cause for cautious optimism. Pegula has won two of her last three encounters with the Belarusian. But Sabalenka holds a dominant 9-4 advantage overall and, critically, has prevailed in every Grand Slam meeting between the pair.
Breaking that major hoodoo on the biggest stage of all would be quite the statement.
