Elena Rybakina swept past Naomi Osaka on Monday evening to move within touching distance of the women's world No. 1 ranking. The victory, achieved in straight sets, leaves the Kazakh star just one win away from dethroning Aryna Sabalenka at the summit of the WTA standings.
Sabalenka, however, has no intention of relinquishing her position quietly. The reigning champion has advanced further in the US Open, setting up a collision course that could decide who holds the top ranking when the dust settles in New York.
