Elena Rybakina's pursuit of the world number one ranking came to a painful halt on Thursday as the Australian Open champion was forced to retire from her Cincinnati Open quarter-final against Iga Swiatek with a left ankle injury.
The second seed needed to reach the final to stand any chance of displacing Aryna Sabalenka at the top of the rankings. Instead, she managed just five games before the dream was over.
Trailing 4-1 in the opening set, Rybakina called for a medical timeout. After receiving treatment from the trainer, she returned to court but played only a single point before pulling the plug - unable to continue on the troublesome ankle.
For Swiatek, it marks a second consecutive victory over Rybakina following her triumph in the Canadian Open final. The Polish star will now take on Jessica Pegula in the semi-finals.
Swiatek was gracious in the aftermath, expressing her hope that Rybakina recovers swiftly and stressing that health matters more than any tournament result, as BBC reports.
