Saint-Malo host Montpellier on Friday in Round 2 of the Feminine Division 1, and the two sides arrive in starkly different moods. Saint-Malo fell 3-2 away to Strasbourg on matchday one, while Montpellier stormed to a 5-1 demolition of Toulouse at home. The gulf in early-season confidence could prove decisive.
Despite scoring twice in the second half at Strasbourg, Saint-Malo dug themselves too deep a hole by conceding twice before the break. Their defence looked vulnerable, and converting their home debut into three points will demand a sharper start. Averaging three goals conceded per game - even from a single fixture - is a red flag.
Five goals in one match tells its own story. Montpellier were ruthless against Toulouse, netting all five in the first half before easing off. That attacking potency, averaging five goals per game, makes them the most dangerous side in the early standings. They now face their first away test of the campaign.
Saint-Malo's home advantage is their main asset, but Montpellier's clinical attack and superior opening display make the visitors favourites. If Saint-Malo repeat their slow start, Montpellier have the quality to punish them early. Expect goals at both ends - but Montpellier look better equipped to control this fixture.
