Jessica Pegula and Iga Swiatek will lock horns for the 13th time on the WTA Tour this Saturday, with a place in the Cincinnati Open final at stake. It is a contest that promises intensity - and neither player will be short of motivation.
Swiatek's route was eased somewhat when Elena Rybakina was forced to retire with a leg injury while trailing 4-1 in their quarter-final. Pegula had no such luck, grinding through a gruelling three-set battle against Amanda Anisimova that stretched beyond two hours.
The Polish star arrives fresh from her Canadian Open title triumph, while Pegula reached the Washington DC Open final and the fourth round in Toronto. Swiatek holds a 7-5 advantage overall, though their last eight meetings are split dead even at four apiece - underlining just how tight this rivalry has become.
Pegula backed her ball-striking to trouble Swiatek but acknowledged the Pole's resurgent form. Swiatek, meanwhile, flagged the unique challenge Pegula poses, particularly with home crowd support behind the American.
Whoever prevails will face either Coco Gauff or Sara Bejlek - who stunned world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka - in the final.
