Team USA's women's basketball squad needed a dramatic late surge to overcome a spirited Italy side 55-52 in what proved to be one of the tightest World Cup games in decades.
Jackie Young top-scored for the Americans with 10 points, but the overall offensive display was far from convincing. The US shot at just 29% - producing their lowest preliminary-round points tally since 1971.
Italy, competing in their first World Cup since 1994, gave the reigning champions a genuine scare. Cecilia Zandalasini was outstanding, finishing with 14 points and seven rebounds to lead the Italian charge.
With the score at 50-48 in Italy's favour during the fourth quarter, the US looked in real trouble. But a decisive 7-0 run turned the tide and sealed a hard-fought win.
Italy had already beaten the Czech Republic earlier in the tournament and will face China in their final pool-stage fixture. The US, meanwhile, turn their attention to the Czech Republic as they look to sharpen up before the knockout rounds.
