A'ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum will both miss the FIBA Women's World Cup, leaving USA Basketball scrambling to reshape its roster ahead of the tournament opener against China.
Wilson, a four-time WNBA MVP and cornerstone of the Las Vegas Aces, is sitting out to focus on playoff preparation. Plum, meanwhile, has been battling a calf injury all season and will now miss the remainder of the WNBA campaign entirely.
Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron have been called up as replacements, ESPN reports. Both players attended U.S. training camps over the winter and were already on the programme's radar.
Even without Wilson and Plum, the American roster is formidable. Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers bring youthful firepower, while Olympic medallists Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young and Kahleah Copper provide invaluable experience. Rhyne Howard and Aliyah Boston are also set for their World Cup debuts.
The U.S. opens its campaign against China, who boast one of basketball's most imposing figures in 7-foot-3 centre Zhang Ziyu. It promises to be a fascinating early test for a reshuffled American side.
