Cathy Engelbert, the first person to hold the title of WNBA Commissioner, is stepping down when the calendar year draws to a close. The announcement, made on 4 September, marks the end of a tenure that began in 2019 and reshaped the league's leadership structure.
Engelbert has not been caught off guard by her own departure. She has spent years preparing for the transition, going so far as to compile shortlists of potential successors.
Far from simply walking away, Engelbert has made clear she wants a hand in choosing who comes next. She stressed the need for a successor who thrives in a public-facing role and has a firm grasp of business stability - two qualities she considers essential for the league's continued growth.
The search spans both internal and external talent. From within the WNBA, Amy Brooks, Bethany Donaphin and Keia Clarke are all regarded as serious contenders, each bringing deep institutional knowledge.
On the external side, Kristyn Cook, Kellyn Smith Kenny and Amy Montagne have emerged as names to watch, all with strong backgrounds in business and marketing tied to the league.
Two figures from other sports organisations are also in the frame. Jessica Berman, the current NWSL commissioner, brings considerable legal and sporting expertise - though her recent contract extension with that league could complicate matters. Anastasia Danias Schmidt, Executive VP and CLO at MLS, rounds out the list of candidates with serious pedigree.
