The WTA Tour is considering reducing the number of mandatory tournaments its players must enter, a move that could reshape the women's tennis calendar in a meaningful way.
Cincinnati Open tournament director Bob Moran, who also sits on the WTA Tour Architecture Council, has revealed that the current structure - which obliges players to compete in a set number of WTA 500 and WTA 1000 events - is proving unsustainable. The requirement to play six WTA 500 tournaments has drawn particular criticism.
Coco Gauff has been one of the most prominent voices pushing back against the gruelling schedule, previously labelling it "impossible". The American has pointed to the physical toll of competing in tournament after tournament with little respite, calling for a shorter season that prioritises player wellbeing.
Her concerns carry weight. Top-level players currently face a competitive window stretching close to ten months, leaving precious little time for recovery or off-season preparation.
On the court, Gauff continues to look sharp. The 2023 champion advanced to the fourth round of the 2026 Cincinnati Open after seeing off Ann Li, extending her perfect record against the compatriot to four wins from four meetings.
Details remain vague, but indications suggest the reduction will be modest - perhaps just one or two fewer mandatory events. Even a small adjustment, though, could prove significant for elite players battling fatigue across a relentless season.
