Julie Allemand has etched her name into the record books, becoming the all-time leading assist player in Women's Basketball World Cup history during Belgium's commanding 80-68 victory over Australia.
The Belgian playmaker racked up her 111th career World Cup assist in the match, eclipsing the previous benchmark of 108 set by Spain's Laia Palau. The record-breaking moment came when teammate Emma Meesseman converted two free throws late in the first half.
Allemand entered the competition with 87 career assists and has been in sensational form, dishing out 24 in just three games. Along the way, she also surpassed the World Cup assist tallies of two iconic names - Dawn Staley and Sue Bird.
Belgium head coach Mike Thibault was quick to praise his floor general, underlining the weight of becoming the tournament's most prolific passer of all time.
At club level, Allemand plies her trade with the Toronto Tempo in the WNBA under Sandy Brondello. Her WNBA coach said she was entirely unsurprised by the record-breaking display, as ESPN reports.
