EDF Logroño host Athletic Club on Saturday in Round 2 of the Primera División Femenina, and the visitors arrive carrying serious momentum. Athletic hammered FC Levante Badalona 3-1 on matchday one, while Logroño earned a clinical 2-0 away win at Real Sociedad. Both sides opened the campaign with victories, setting the stage for a fiery early-season encounter.
Athletic closed last season on a tear - winning three of their final four league matches, scoring seven goals and conceding just two. Logroño's end to 2025-26 was more erratic: a 4-1 demolition of Levante and a 3-0 home win over Madrid CFF were sandwiched around two defeats, including a 2-0 loss to Athletic at this very ground in May.
That result is part of a broader trend. Athletic have won three of the last five meetings between these sides, with Logroño claiming just one victory - a 3-0 home rout back in December 2020. The most recent clash at this venue ended 2-0 to Athletic, who kept Logroño scoreless across both halves.
Logroño showed sharp attacking instincts against Real Sociedad, scoring both goals in the second half. Athletic, meanwhile, demonstrated firepower of their own at home but did concede. The key question is whether Logroño can find the defensive solidity they lacked in recent head-to-heads. Athletic's ability to score in both halves and grind out results on the road makes them slight favourites, but an early-season home fixture could level the playing field.
