VfL Wolfsburg's women's side saw their Champions League hopes crushed in agonising fashion. Despite carrying a 2-0 advantage from the first leg against Inter Milan, the German club crumbled in the return fixture, losing 3-1 on the night. That levelled the tie on aggregate, and Inter went on to prevail in a penalty shootout.
It was a bitter pill for Wolfsburg, who looked well placed to progress but simply could not hold their nerve when it mattered most.
Eintracht Frankfurt fared no better. Already weakened by the absence of key player Larissa Mühlhaus through injury, things quickly unravelled against Paris Saint-Germain. A red card compounded their problems, and PSG took full advantage, running out emphatic 5-1 winners in the qualifying round, Soccerdonna reports.
It means neither German side will feature in this season's Champions League - a bruising night for Bundesliga women's football.
