American teenager Iva Jovic ground out a gruelling three-set victory over Alexandra Eala at the U.S. Open, prevailing 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in a contest that stretched beyond the three-hour mark.
Eala looked dangerous after snatching the second set and breaking Jovic in the opening game of the decider. But Jovic steadied herself, breaking back two games later to level proceedings before edging a tense final set.
Jovic's reward is a fourth-round showdown with former U.S. Open champion Coco Gauff - a pairing that guarantees at least one American woman in the quarterfinals. Gauff booked her spot with a convincing earlier win and will be the clear favourite, but Jovic's resilience under pressure suggests she won't be overawed.
