Mali produced one of the biggest shocks in Women's Basketball World Cup history on Saturday, toppling Spain in a performance that will live long in the memory. It was just the second time Mali have ever tasted victory at the tournament.
Trailing at the break, Mali exploded after half-time with a devastating 31-19 third quarter that flipped the contest on its head. Sika Kone was at the heart of it all, draining two pivotal three-pointers during a decisive scoring run. She finished with an imposing 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Mali carried that momentum into the fourth quarter, rattling off the opening five points - including yet another Kone triple. Spain never got closer than nine points for the remainder, their challenge effectively over.
Djeneba N'Diaye matched Kone's 19-point haul for Mali, while Iyana Martin top-scored for Spain with 20 points in a losing effort, ESPN reports.
