France's top-tier women's football division is set to break new ground this season with the introduction of both a collective agreement and Video Assistant Referee technology - becoming the first women's league anywhere in the world to deploy VAR.
The Première Ligue, overseen by the Ligue féminine de football professionnel since its creation on 1 July 2024, has spent its early months focused on giving the competition proper structure. That effort has included pushing for more fixtures in major stadiums and rolling out financial incentives for clubs via the Licence Pro system and quality labels.
The collective agreement delivers meaningful gains for players, incorporating health guarantees alongside safeguards on governance and image rights. Negotiations proved tricky at times, though insiders have described the friction as entirely expected given the sensitive nature of the topics on the table.
The VAR system, configured by FIFA, represents a landmark moment. Beyond aiding match officials, it brings four additional cameras to each fixture - a boost for broadcast quality and overall production values, as OneFootball reports.
The bill for these upgrades has been eased by backing from principal sponsor Arkema and new commercial partner Betclic. The investment is geared towards raising the league's profile domestically and on the international stage.
