Italian women's football veteran Daniela Sabatino has called time on a 26-year professional career, announcing her retirement at the age of 41.

Italian women's football stalwart Daniela Sabatino has hung up her boots at the age of 41, confirming the news via social media. The striker's professional journey, which began when she was just 15, spanned more than two and a half decades at the top of the game.
Sabatino's last club was US Sassuolo, where her contract expired in June. She featured in 15 Serie A Women matches during her farewell campaign, netting twice. A landmark moment arrived in May when she reached 100 competitive appearances for the club in a fixture against AS Roma, as Soccerdonna reports.
She first joined Sassuolo for the 2019/20 season before returning in January 2023 for a further three-and-a-half-year spell.
Sabatino's club career took her through a host of Italian sides. After a stint in Switzerland with Rapid Lugano, she moved to Reggiana in 2006 and then spent eight trophy-laden seasons at Brescia. Spells at AC Milan and Fiorentina followed, cementing her reputation as one of Serie A's most lethal finishers.
She shared the league's top scorer award in 2010/11 and claimed it outright in 2021/22. In February 2024, Sassuolo celebrated her remarkable milestone of 500 career goals across all clubs.
On the international stage, Sabatino earned 74 caps for Italy and scored 31 goals. She represented her country at the 2017 European Championship, the 2019 World Cup, and the 2022 European Championship.
In her farewell message, Sabatino admitted she had hoped for a different ending but hinted she may stay involved in football in a new role.
