Miyu Yamashita has grabbed the spotlight at the CPKC Women's Open. She fired a scorching 8-under 62 at Royal Mayfair on Thursday, seizing a one-stroke advantage over Nasa Hataoka. Her morning round ended in style - a birdie on the par-4 ninth.
American Kiara Romero sits third after posting a 64 in what is only her first round as an LPGA Tour member. Behind her lurk Canadian teenagers Anna Huang and Michelle Xing, plus China's Ruoning Yi. Let that sink in - a pair of teenage Canadians outgunning most of the field.
Huang, based in Vancouver, already boasts four wins on the Ladies European Tour. Xing, an amateur from Richmond Hill, hasn't even started her freshman year at UCLA yet. Romero, meanwhile, is just the second player ever to earn LPGA Tour membership via the LPGA Elite Amateur Pathway.
Both Yamashita and Hataoka flagged an unlikely adversary on the course - mosquitoes. Hataoka closed her round with a bogey on No. 9, perhaps distracted. World No. 1 Nelly Korda and home favourite Brooke Henderson also featured, with Henderson looking to sharpen her game heading into round two.
