NJ/NY Gotham FC travel to the Bay Area riding a wave of off-pitch upheaval - and a record that screams title contender. Second in the NWSL on 31 points, just two behind leaders Washington Spirit, Gotham have lost only three times all season. But their all-time leading scorer Esther González has departed for Spain, and Emily Sonnett is out after surgery following a stretcher exit against Portland.
Sam Kerr's arrival softens the blow. The NWSL's all-time top scorer netted in that Portland draw and is chasing González's club scoring record. With Kayla Duran and Denise O'Sullivan also absent, Gotham's squad depth faces a real test on this western road trip.
Bay FC sit 14th on 18 points and need results urgently if they harbour any playoff ambitions. Their recent form tells an interesting story: back-to-back clean-sheet wins over Racing Louisville (2-0) and North Carolina (3-0) sandwiched a loss at Houston. Karlie Lema has been lethal, matching the club record of three consecutive games with a goal.
At home, Bay average just one goal per game with only two wins in seven - a concern against Gotham's miserly defence, which boasts nine clean sheets this season.
Gotham have never lost to Bay FC. In five meetings stretching back to 2024, Gotham have won four and drawn one, outscoring Bay 13-3 in the process. Earlier this season, they dismantled Bay 3-0 in New Jersey. That lopsided record should alarm the hosts.
Gotham's defensive record - 0.8 goals conceded per match - clashes directly with Bay's modest home output. If Kerr can exploit the space left by a Bay side that must attack, Gotham's quality could prove decisive despite their absentees. Bay's best hope lies in capitalising on Gotham's disrupted backline and riding their recent scoring surge. Expect a tactical tug-of-war, but the visitors carry the pedigree to edge it.
