Boston Legacy host Portland Thorns on Saturday in a match where both sides desperately need points - but arrive in wildly different states of mind. Boston sit 12th on 20 points from 18 matches, five points adrift of the playoff places. Portland occupy sixth with 28 points yet have won just once in their last five outings. Something has to give.
A form line of DWLWW tells only part of the story. Boston have beaten Kansas City and Orlando Pride in recent weeks, showing they can hurt sides above them. Nichelle Prince, acquired from Kansas City ahead of the season, leads the team in assists and ranks third in goal contributions. At home, Boston average 1.4 goals per game with four wins from 11 matches - modest, but their best work comes on their own pitch.
The Thorns were hammered 5-1 by Utah Royals last time out, conceding four in the second half. Away from home, the numbers are brutal: three wins from ten, just 1.2 goals scored per game, and 2.1 conceded. Portland's road defence has leaked 21 goals, the worst in that column among playoff contenders. Their form reads LDLLW - one win in five - and the confidence drain is palpable.
Portland are a different animal at Providence Park, where they remain unbeaten with six clean sheets in eight matches. But on the road, they look vulnerable. Boston's home record is nothing spectacular, yet Portland's travelling woes present a clear opportunity for Legacy to land a decisive blow in the playoff race.
Boston will fancy their chances against a Portland side leaking goals away from home. Prince's creativity and Boston's improving home form give them a genuine edge. Portland need a response after the Utah humiliation, and their quality means they cannot be dismissed. Expect a tight, tense affair - but the hosts hold more cards than the table suggests.
