NJ/NY Gotham FC sit top of the NWSL on 44 points - seven clear of second place - and welcome a Portland Thorns side on a three-match winning streak. This is a clash between the league's most formidable defensive unit and one of its most potent attacks, and the play-off picture could shift depending on the outcome.
Gotham's nine-match unbeaten run tells only half the story. Ann-Katrin Berger has recorded 10 clean sheets this season, and the hosts concede just 0.6 goals per game overall - dropping to 0.5 at home, where they've lost only once all campaign. The trade of Sarah Schupansky to Boston Legacy and the signing of Tess Boade suggest the squad is being fine-tuned for the stretch run. The departure of all-time top scorer Esther González to Al-Qadsiah leaves a gap up front, but Gotham's recent 1-0 results prove they can grind out wins without prolific scoring.
Portland arrive with three consecutive victories - 4-3 at Boston Legacy, 2-1 against Orlando Pride and 1-0 over Denver Summit. Sophia Wilson netted her 10th goal of the season against Denver, reaching double figures for the fourth time in an NWSL campaign. The Thorns average 1.7 goals per match, but their away record is a concern: four wins, six defeats and one draw on the road, shipping 2.2 goals per game. At home they're unbeaten, yet this trip to the East Coast will test their resilience.
Gotham have dominated this fixture in recent years. They beat Portland 3-0 at home last September, won 2-1 in the 2024 play-off quarter-finals and took three points in Portland in March 2024. The reverse fixture this season ended 2-2, the first time Gotham failed to beat the Thorns since April 2025 when Portland ran out 4-1 winners. On home turf, Gotham hold the clear upper hand.
Gotham midfielder Rose Lavelle left their goalless draw at Angel City after a heavy fall in the 31st minute. Her availability for this match could prove decisive. A missed Guro Reiten penalty in that same game highlighted that Gotham's attack still misfires at times, and losing a creative force like Lavelle would sharpen that problem against a Portland side capable of punishing any slip.
Gotham's home record and defensive discipline make them the favourites, but Portland's current momentum and attacking firepower - led by Wilson and fed by Jessie Fleming - mean they won't be easily shut out. Expect a tight, tactically disciplined contest. If Portland's leaky away defence travels with them, Gotham should have enough to edge it. But underestimate this surging Thorns outfit at your peril.
