Courage riding a rollercoaster

North Carolina Courage sit sixth in the NWSL on 30 points from 19 matches - firmly inside the playoff quarter-final zone but with no margin for complacency. Their recent form reads LWWWL, a sequence that captures everything about this team: explosive on their day, brittle the next. A 5-0 demolition of Orlando Pride and a stunning 4-3 win away at Washington Spirit show a devastating attacking outfit. Yet a 1-4 home collapse against Utah Royals and last weekend's stoppage-time defeat to Houston Dash - losing 2-3 after Clarissa Larisey struck in added time - expose a persistent vulnerability at the back.

The numbers underline the contradiction. The Courage have scored 34 goals in 19 matches but conceded 29, the worst defensive record of any side currently in playoff position. At home, they average 2.1 goals scored but ship 1.8 per game - meaning entertainment is virtually guaranteed.

Boston struggling on the road

Boston Legacy arrive in dire form and dire straits. Fourteenth in the table with 20 points from 20 matches, their LLDWL run offers little encouragement. Worse still, their away record is alarming: just one win, three draws and four defeats in eight road trips, averaging a meagre 0.6 goals per game while conceding 1.6.

Last weekend's 1-4 hammering at Racing Louisville, where Kayla Fischer ran riot, was their third consecutive defeat. Boston have shipped four goals in two of their last three outings - against Portland Thorns (3-4) and Louisville - and their fragile backline looks set for another uncomfortable evening.

Head-to-head and what it tells us

The reverse fixture in April ended 2-2, with Boston racing into a two-goal lead before the Courage stormed back in the second half. That comeback hints at North Carolina's character and second-half intensity, but also at Boston's ability to cause problems early. The question is whether Legacy can sustain any advantage they create.

Goals look inevitable

Both teams concede freely. North Carolina's home matches produce an average of 3.9 goals, while Boston's away fixtures average 2.3. Neither side keeps many clean sheets - five for the Courage across 19 matches, just three for Boston in 20. The stage is set for an open, high-scoring affair.

How this match could unfold

North Carolina's superior home firepower and Boston's wretched road form point firmly towards a Courage victory. The hosts' 34 goals suggest they will create chances in bunches, and Boston's defence has shown little capacity to resist sustained pressure. Yet the Courage's own defensive lapses - illustrated by that last-gasp loss to Houston - mean Legacy will fancy their chances of finding the net at least once.
