SKN St. Pölten face a daunting task this Wednesday evening as they travel to Stadio La Marmora-Pozzo in Biella, needing to overturn a three-goal deficit against Juventus in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Women's Champions League.
The Austrian side were thoroughly outplayed in the first leg, falling 3-0. Tatiana Pinto opened the scoring after just eight minutes, Martina Rosucci doubled the lead before half-time, and Pinto struck again ten minutes from the final whistle to give Juventus a commanding advantage.
The numbers paint a bleak picture for St. Pölten. Across 15 European fixtures against Italian clubs, they are yet to record a single victory. Their record against Juventus specifically is even more alarming - three meetings in continental competition have yielded three defeats and a combined scoreline of 1-12, as Soccerdonna reports.
The two sides also met during last season's league phase, when St. Pölten suffered a bruising 5-0 home defeat.
Elimination would not end St. Pölten's European season entirely. They would drop into the second qualifying round of the UEFA Women's Europa Cup.
Meanwhile, Juventus could have Austrian representation in their ranks for a potential league phase celebration. Larissa Rusek, a 21-year-old goalkeeper who joined the club in January, currently serves as understudy to first-choice Daniëlle de Jong.
