The Williams sisters stepped onto Arthur Ashe Stadium together for the first time in four years, reuniting for a doubles campaign at the U.S. Open that had fans on their feet before a ball was even struck.
Their opponents, Maya Joint and Chan Hao-Ching, were no pushovers. The match went the distance, and when the sisters found themselves trailing 5-0 in a 10-point match tiebreak, most would have written them off. Not these two. The No. 14 seeds clawed their way back in trademark fashion, but the deficit ultimately proved too deep, and they fell in a tight finish.
It was a loss on the scoreboard, but it hardly felt like one inside the stadium.
The atmosphere at Arthur Ashe was electric throughout. Fans weren't just cheering for two former world number ones - they were celebrating what the Williams sisters represent: pioneers of women's tennis and trailblazers for Black women in sport. Their presence alone was the story, and the gutsy performance only added to the occasion, as The Athletic reports.
