Manchester City keeper Ayaka Yamashita has landed a spot on the shortlist for Women's Goalkeeper of the Year at the 2026 Ballon d'Or ceremony in London.
Not bad for a goalkeeper who spent the season making strikers look silly.
Yamashita was instrumental in City's dominant 2025/26 campaign, helping the club clinch both the Barclays Women's Super League and FA Cup titles. Across 20 appearances, she racked up eight clean sheets - a tally that speaks for itself.
Two moments stood out. A nerveless one-on-one denial of Freya Godfrey during a crunch clash with London City Lionesses. Then an acrobatic stop to thwart Erin Cuthbert at the Etihad Stadium - a save so good it won the WSL's Save of the Month award, as reported by OneFootball.
Yamashita faces a formidable field. Ann-Katrin Berger (Gotham FC), Cata Coll (FC Barcelona), Hannah Hampton (Chelsea), and Lorena (Kansas City Current) round out the five-strong shortlist. May the best gloves win.
