Birmingham City kicked off their Barclays Women's Super League campaign with a 3-1 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday - and honestly, it could have been worse.
Khadija Shaw bagged a brace, Mary Fowler chipped in with another, and that was pretty much that. Océane Hurtré did grab a late consolation for Birmingham in stoppage time, which at least gave the travelling fans something to cheer about.
Head coach Amy Merricks wasn't about to let the scoreline dampen her spirits. She pointed to encouraging signs throughout the match and praised the character her squad showed - particularly that never-say-die attitude that produced a goal right at the death.
Her main takeaway? The team needs more belief and positivity on the ball. Not a bad foundation to build on, all things considered.
Several young players made their WSL debuts during the match, and Merricks is clearly excited about the potential in her squad, as highlighted by WSL Full-Time. She also tipped her hat to the fans in attendance, expressing hope that even bigger crowds will turn up for future fixtures. Lessons learned, optimism intact - not a bad day at the office for a promoted side.
