Two of Sweden's biggest clubs have rocketed through the women's football pyramid since forming their teams in 2019 - and promotion to the top flight is now tantalisingly close.

Just six years ago, West Sweden was a barren landscape when it came to elite women's football. Not a single major club from the region featured in the Damallsvenskan. That has changed - dramatically.
IFK Göteborg and Elfsborg, two of Swedish football's most storied men's clubs, both launched women's teams in 2019. Starting life in Division 4 in 2020, the pair have surged through the pyramid at remarkable speed and now sit among the frontrunners in Elitettan, as Dagens Nyheter reports.
IFK Göteborg currently top the Elitettan standings, with Elfsborg lurking in third. Both sides have delivered impressive campaigns, and with several fixtures still to play, promotion to the Damallsvenskan is firmly within reach for each.
Those closest to the project have watched the transformation unfold in real time. Leann Nyström and Tea Skoglund, key figures at Elfsborg, have experienced the club's evolution first-hand - from modest beginnings to improved facilities and growing supporter engagement.
Despite the excitement, both squads are keen to keep their feet on the ground. Players have spoken about the importance of staying focused and resisting the temptation to rush the journey. The ambition, though, is unmistakable: Damallsvenskan football in West Sweden feels closer than ever.
